Publisher's blurb

Japanese confectionery shops used to be divided into two categories: shops that provided wagashi (traditional Japanese confectioneries) to those associated with the Imperial Court, and neighbourhood shops that made simpler kinds for the general public. Recently, the idea of such neighbourhood shops has faded from everyday life, with people now perceiving Western sweets as the norm and wagashi only for special occasions or celebratory gifts. This beautifully photographed book shows how Higashiya strives to change this by recreating Japans proud culture of wagashi to fit our modern lives, by placing emphasis on the sense of the seasons and their nuances.
